TR4KS
This is my first entry into the Java4K 2010 competition, which requires the entrant to create a java applet no more than 4K in size.
The best way to describe this is a cross between Tetris and the hacking mini-game within Bioshock. I went for a train theme rather than pipes, as I have an abundance of train toys littering the house at the moment.
Some things that may be of interest:
- The actual compiled applet class is about 12K, but tools like ProGuard do a wonderful job of reducing class file size.
- The time taken to get a working applet up and running in playable form took about 3 hours. It took another day of mucking around with the images and deployment files to get something that could be deployable to Java4K. Another couple of days were spent revamping the graphics and adding extra features.
- I've made a few additions after some feedback on the way the game works. The grid size is now a bit bigger and it's possible to rotate the tiles. There are also random trees to navigate around.
- All the original 32x32 bitmap images were replaced by procedural images using Java2D. This saved some space in the final archive, and the end result looks a lot better.
Play the game within a Java applet if you dare.
